Power Steering Fluid

To most drivers, steering is nothing more than a turn of the wheel. Actually, this subtle action is quite complex, requiring a specific hydraulic fluid of its own to convert the circular movements of your steering wheel to the pivoting tires.

The power steering pump pressurizes the fluid which then applies said pressure on either side of a piston, attached to the rack which holds the wheels. When this fluid becomes oxidized or otherwise incapable of providing the smooth turning expected from power steering, it is time for a change. Avoiding power steering fluid changes may result in the increased wear and potential breakdown of the power steering pump (an expensive component) and eventually, the power-steering rack (a more expensive component).

Make sure you are paying close attention to the resistance with which you are met when you are turning your steering wheel: this may indicate a ripe time for a fluid change. Additionally, should your power steering components seem to be emitting any sort of unusual noises or you notice a leak, it is in your best interest to drain and replace your power steering fluid as soon as possible.
