ISO VG 460, AGMA 7 Oil

ISO VG and AGMA are two classifications that represent the same measurement of industrial and gear lubricants: viscosity. Viscosity is a fluid's resistance to flow - the higher the viscosity, the thicker the oil runs. This property requires thoughtful observation when considering implementing new oils in an industrial machine: the wrong oil could mean an undesirable result.

ISO VG 460 oil has a midpoint kinematic viscosity of 460 cSt (centistokes). The midpoint is derived by taking the average of both the minimum and maximum kinematic viscosities which is accounted for by the AGMA designation. The maximum and minimum kinematic viscosity of an AGMA 7 oil is 506 mPa.s and 414 mPa.S, respectively. Averaging these two quantities together, the result is equivalent to the midpoint kinematic viscosity measured in the ISO VG testing mechanism.

These numbers are deserving of much consideration before implementing new lubricants - always consult OEM specifications to be certain that you are choosing the right oil for your machinery.
