Piston Engine Oils

Aircraft engines are some of the most expensive and complicated piston engines in production today. Understandably, these machines cannot afford engine failure while they glide a mile above sea level - as such, these engines require routine analysis and upkeep to make sure they are firing on all cylinders.

One of the most vital forms of preventative maintenance is the implementation of a premium-quality engine oil. However, when considering purchasing new aviation oil, it is wise to understand all facets of the complicated process of finding the correct lubricant for your application.

Aircraft engines are air-cooled and as such do not respond well to automotive engine oils. Never use an automotive engine oil in an aircraft's oil tank or vice versa. Additionally, the additive systems in aviation oils greatly differ from those commonly found in automotive oils.

This is due to the fact that aircraft engines do not respond well to detergents within engine lubricants. These additives do wear out (and often at much greater rates than those present in automotive engine oil) so it is absolutely necessary to do routine oil analysis to prevent possible engine failure or decreased performance.
